Equality for women artists now!
I came across an online article today that took me back to when I studied for my PGCE course, a year or so ago now. I was dumbfounded when most of the group of women in a seminar believed that they had equal opportunities to do any job they wanted... I cited the fact that in most primary schools most teachers are female and yet most primary heads are male, most bank clerks seem to be female, but most bank managers are male - and how many female prime ministers have we had, and what about the numbers of black or asian women in these roles?
Despite these realities this group of women, predominantly in their 30s, felt that if they wanted a particular job they had an equal chance of getting it as their male counterparts... Sadly misguided, I felt. And more worryingly, I think this belief leads to a kind of complacency that will only make the situation worse. Whether this small group of women in this timewarp called Cornwall is indicitive of a wider held belief I don't know, but I would urge anyone that holds this view to have a look a the facts and figures...
Check out the following article in an American magazine about women artists in New York villagevoice.com I can't say I was surprised, but I wonder what those women in my seminar group would think? Have a read and a ponder yourself. What do you think? Are you happy with this situation?
Hmmmm - I wonder what a survey of London galleries/museums would find?

That's amazing - I've never heard of such a thing! Maybe it's just a UK 'problem'??? If you look down the list of this county's heads there are an inordinate number of misters - maybe it's even just a Cornwall thing?
